In the late '90s Neil fronted a band called Slowdive, and after a couple of really good records they split. From there Neil formed his current band Mojave 3, who have released 4 records to date with a few more to come, we hope. It is hard to find 2 bands with more critical accolades, and at the core of those bands was Neil and his songwriting. 'Oh Mighty Engine' is the name of Neil's newest solo record. It is a record that can handle excessive listens and seems to absorb every mood I have thrown at it. It is really hard to find a record that can make you happy, sad, and can make you laugh all at once.

It's going to be great to see Neil back in Pilton.

JIM CRAWFORD
22 October 2011
Pilton Village Hall, Pilton, Nr. Barnstaple, EX31 (click here for map)
Tickets - £7 from Pilton Stores or click here to email...
The Hippy Cowboys next offering is the acclaimed blues artist Jim Crawford unplugged at Pilton Hall Barnstaple on 22nd October.

Much of Jim’s music is inspired from the old delta blues music, but the delta where Jim resides is not in Mississippi, but the more local Taw and Torridge one in Appledore.

Although residing in Appledore for a number of years, Jim’s roots are Lancastrian, and the northern dry deadpan humour comes out to great effect as he recounts little snippets of his life and general observations whilst he tunes up between songs.

This soon puts the audience at ease and they quickly relax into the excellent guitar and vocal talents on offer.

The repertoire is wide ranging and well thought out, mixing the traditional blues of  Messrs Robert Johnson,  Lightning Hopkins etc., with the more contemporary and varied music of Ry Cooder, Bobby Womack and even the odd Bob Dylan number. But Jim’s talents do not end here he is also a skillful, thoughtful and amusing song writer and the set included several examples, such as “Sugar Cane”, “When The Rains Came” and “Pigs Might Fly”, to which the audience sang a very passable chorus.

Jim also has his new album "Roots & Originals" out now and will be playing a selection of the songs on the album along with some old favorite.

OTIS GIBBS
16 September 2011
Pilton Village Hall, Pilton, Nr. Barnstaple, EX31 (click here for map)
Otis Gibbs is a man in search of an honest experience.  Some people refer to him as a folk artist, but that is a simplistic way to describe a man who has planted over 7,000 trees, slept in hobo jungles, walked with nomadic shepherds in the Carpathian Mountains.  Otis has played everywhere from labor rallies in Wisconsin, to anti-war protests in Texas, Austria and the Czech Republic, Feed & Seed Stores in the Midwestern U.S. and in countless, theaters, festivals, bars and living rooms. Much of his work concentrates on the world that is ignored by pop culture. Sometimes forgotten, obsolete or simply marginalized, it is a world that doesn’t fit into a twenty-second sound bite or a White House talking point. Otis has spent the last fifteen years traveling across America and abroad documenting this world, and has a story to share about each stop along the way.
